Wiscasset and several spots in it are getting a shout-out in American Automobile Association’s magazine Northern New England Journey. The July-August issue has an article on the town and photos of Moulinette, Red’s Eats and Castle Tucker.

It also mentions Museum in the Streets, Sprague’s Lobster, Rock Paper Scissors, In the Clover, BIRCH, Wiscasset Bay Gallery, Treats and Little Village Bistro.

“It’s gorgeous. Very nice,” Historic New England’s Wiscasset site manager Peg Konitzky said Friday about the piece. She recalled walking editor-in-chief Al Bonowitz from Castle Tucker to the organization’s other property in town, Nickels-Sortwell House, in 2015. The art walk was happening and the weather was exquisite, Konitzky said.

Bonowitz recently sent her a note, thanking her for the tour and saying the article had taken time but was always going to be done, she said. Over the two years, “I completely forgot about it,” she added.

The article by Mimi Bigelow Steadman starts, “Wiscasset is notorious for reducing traffic on US Route 1 to a crawl. Why not embrace the pace?” It notes the boutiques, lobster rolls and 1700s architecture and adds, “You’ll soon agree with locals that Wiscasset is ‘Maine’s Prettiest Village.’”

Konitzky liked the phrase “embrace the pace.” She said she thinks it would make a good slogan.

BIRCH co-owner Brad Sevaldson thought the same thing. Interviewed separately, he brought up the phrase and said, “That is a slogan we need to take and run with.” He said the article was a very positive thing for Wiscasset. “I’m so pleased that something nice and positive has come out,” he added. “I think we’re on the right track, and I’m feeling positive about the future of the town.”

Some of the shop’s visitors have mentioned they saw the article, Sevaldson said.
