Shanon Cotta filed nomination paperwork for first selectman in Alna Jan. 17.

Cotta stated in a press release, “Alna is a place of stunning, natural beauty with a unique history and character. I am committed to serving the people of Alna with fairness and integrity.”

The release states Cotta’s campaign focuses on three principal points to improve the lives of Alna families:

1. Advocate for supporting our public school system and local private schools

2. Grow small business

3. Reduce wasteful spending

Cotta is a lifelong Maine resident. He was raised and educated in public schools and universities such as China Elementary School, Erskine Academy, the University of Maine at Farmington and the University of Maine.

As a strong supporter of first responders like firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement, he understands and supports their importance to the community because he worked as a combat medic in South Korea, the release continues. He also served during Hurricane Katrina Relief Operations in New Orleans, Louisiana and Tropical Storm Irene in Vermont conducting humanitarian aid assistance.

Major Cotta has served for over 26 years in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve and the Maine Army National Guard. As a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom II, he understands the meaning of service to our country and the State of Maine, the release states.
