David Rice Orne, affectionately known as “Grampy Grump,” 73, of Yarmouth died peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on June 23, 2016 at the Gosnell House in Scarborough.

David was born in Boothbay Harbor on January 12, 1943, one of two sons of Albert and Evelyn (Gallant) Orne.

David was an avid outdoorsman and became a Master Maine Guide in 1958. If he wasn’t fishing, he was hunting; if he wasn’t hunting, he was fishing … or out playing golf, can’t forget about golf! He had an endless love for the outdoors and an incredible work ethic. He began as a meat cutter fresh out of high school and worked for a number of local stores in both Maine and New Hampshire. He began working as a tinsmith at Bath Iron Works in the early ’70s and continued his career with them up until retiring in 1994. If he wasn’t working or enjoying the outdoors, he was actively participating within his community. David was a member of the Amvets Post 2 in Yarmouth for 30 years and even held the title commander of Sons of Amvets from 2006-2008.

David is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Leslie Orne of Yarmouth; daughters, Lisa Orne Hallinan and her husband, Richard of Boothbay Harbor, Teresa Orne Bryer of Boothbay, and son, the late Michael Harvey Orne; 9 grandchildren, Cody Orne, Dana and Evelyn Greenleaf, Brandon Markowski, Kaitlin Orne, Bruce Orne and Stephanie Bryer, all in the Boothbay area, Brittney Christy and her husband Sam of Houston, Texas, and Megan Shanholtz and her husband Wesley of Bowdoinham; and five great-grandchildren, Lilly Carol Brown, Rory, Mia, Owen and Roman.

David was predeceased by both parents, Albert and Evelyn Orne, and his brother, Donald and his wife Shelley Orne.

Visiting hours will be at Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth on Thursday, June 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a reception at Amvets in Yarmouth. All are welcome to attend and share memories, laughter or tears.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Gosnell Hospice House and Hospice of Southern Maine for David’s exceptional care. Words can never describe how deeply grateful we are for all that you have done.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gosnell House in memory of David. Donations can also be made at his celebration of life for a Memory Brick which will have David’s name printed on it and will be laid within the walkway at Gosnell.
