Diabetes education series in Damariscotta

Thu, 09/14/2017 - 7:15am

To help individuals better manage their diabetes, a series of three diabetes education classes will take place at Schooner Cove in Damariscotta starting Wednesday, Oct. 4. The free classes are led by LincolnHealth diabetes educators and registered dieticians.

By learning how to better manage diabetes, community members can feel better, have more energy, and decrease their chances of complications such as a heart attack or stroke. Topics covered during the series include general information, treatment options and medications, how to prevent problems caused by diabetes, nutrition, and more.

The same series of classes took place in Boothbay Harbor in May, in Waldoboro in June, and is currently taking place in Wiscasset. Participants described the series as being “very informative,” “encouraging,” and “just what they needed.” They learned how to eat well-balanced meals, the correct portion sizes for each type of food, and proper proportions of food in relation to diabetes medications, especially insulin.

Participants are encouraged to attend all three classes in the series as each class covers different topics. The classes will take place at Schooner Cove on Oct. 4 and 11 from 3-5 p.m. and on Oct. 18 from 3-4:30 p.m. Schooner Cove is located on the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta.

Anyone with diabetes who wants to learn more about diabetes self-management and available resources is welcome to join. No physician referral is needed. Participants are welcome to bring a guest with them if they choose.
