An electrical issue with a light fixture sparked a fire in the basement of a home at 16 Old County Road in Wiscasset June 25, Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry said.

No one was hurt in Thursday’s fire, reported shortly before 8 p.m. Fire damage was confined to the basement; there was minimal smoke damage elsewhere in the vacant, three-story home owned by Tim Swinburne, fire officials said.

Assistant Wiscasset Fire Chief Nick Merry said his father, Tim Merry, the department’s safety officer and former chief, lives nearby and was coming home from playing basketball when he spotted smoke at a neighboring home.

Firefighters located flames in the home’s basement; the fire was knocked down quickly and then put out, the assistant chief said.

Firefighters from Dresden, Woolwich, Westport Island, Alna and Bath helped Wiscasset firefighters at the scene, he said. Wiscasset police and Wiscasset Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

Edgecomb firefighters were among those helping cover the Wiscasset fire station, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said.

Old County Road is a dead-end road off Birch Point Road.
