On Eating and Loving Food

Everybody loves breakfast

Especially on weekends!

I love waking up on a Saturday or Sunday morning. My first thought is about what I'll have for breakfast.

My weekend breakfasts can be a little (or a lot) less healthy than weekday breakfasts. I'm a grownup, I live alone, and I can make my own food choices. If I choose to have pancakes and bacon, scrambled eggs with sausage, biscuits or popovers with too much butter, fried eggs with baked beans, sausage and toast, I can do it. Even though I know I'll live to regret it within the hour.

So if you could have anything you wanted for a leisurely weekend breakfast, and weight wasn't an issue (ha ha), what would you have?

I asked that question to a few Facebook friends. I don't have that many friends in real life.

People, it appears, love breakfast, and bacon is the hands-down winner when it comes to favorite breakfast foods. No surprise there. Sally Bullard’s one word comment: “BACON!!!!” echos most people’s sentiments.

My cousin Chuck, whose daughter, Christienne, lives in England, said he would have a full English breakfast but without the blood sausage. Right Chuck. Gross.

My sister-in-law, Kerry Lyons, said she likes blueberry pancakes with a fried over easy egg on top. Sounds weird, but she's a great cook, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Caroline Canning said she’d go for a breakfast burrito filled with eggs, homemade spicy sausage, diced crispy home fries, cilantro, tomato, onion and cheddar cheese. “And for dessert: a gooey cinnamon roll.” She’d probably share it with a few rescued dogs.

Renee Coombs said her fave breakfast (which she, too, would probably share with a few rescued dogs) is a huge warm cinnamon bun and a generous side of bacon. No argument there.

Pam Logan voted for Bavarian stuffed french toast, with berries and pure Maine maple syrup, and lots of bacon.

    Elise Isabel Andersen: “Strata.” Period.

My dear old friend, Teresa Lagrange, who once had one too many glasses of wine at my cousin’s cottage in Cushing, and commented on a “short-catted leg” who ran across the room, couldn’t decide between crepes and eggs Benedict.

Margaret Salt McLellan said she loves scrambled eggs from Frank Perkins' free range, happy chickens. She also loves ployes (French Acadian buckwheat pancakes). So do I. If you've never had them pick up a bag of the mix at most grocery stores. They are cholesterol free. They are ridiculous. Of course, I slather them with butter.

My co-worker and new idol Morgan Callan Rogers said she covets eggs Benedict, sweet potato home fries, fruit salad, a sticky bun, a pot of tea, and orange juice for a weekend breakfast.

Patricia Moroz: “Ooohhh! Blueberry waffles and crispy bacon! I'm so easy.” You’re not THAT easy Trisha :-)

Jeanne Whitestone Casey said she likes breakfast for dinner: Banana pancakes and sausage. Pamela O’Connor opts for French toast made with challah. Anna Giles likes sausage omelette, home fries, thick crispy bacon and toast with strawberry jelly. Me too, Anna.

Emily Bulkeley, sister of my ex-roommate, Benny, in the “Thunderdome” here at the Boothbay Register, said her breakfast of choice is tiramisu. “I had tiramisu five times last week ... two of those times were for breakfast,” she said. “Rough week.” Lucky Emily. She looks like she lives on Greek yogurt and grapes.

Jennifer Hallett Chipman loves breakfast. “Wow that's a tough one,” she said. “I'm a breakfast person! French toast with cinnamon raisin bread, waffles, bacon, eggs Benedict ... too many to love!”

My cousin Sandie Barr opts for eggs Florentine, marble rye toast, red potato home fries with a side of bacon and a small fruit dish.

“Crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, toast with jam or marmalade and pots of tea with milk and honey,” said Janet Adamson. I don’t know her, but any friend of Caroline Canning’s is a friend of mine. And that includes Bernie Sanders’ new rescue grandpup.

“To heck with the issues,” Helen Farnham said, vehemently. “I'm having blueberry pancakes and crispy bacon ... along with a fabulous dark roast coffee.”

My friend Carol Tanner, better known as Mrs. Mustard, said of the photo I posted on Facebook, “Suzi, looks delicious but Dennis would add a few drops of Habanero Heaven to the eggs.” Dennis is her husband, and together they make Mother’s Mountain Mustard and the hot sauce she mentioned. I will get some of that. Their mustard is wicked good. Google it ...

I can't tell you what Bet Finocchiaro said she'd like for breakfast. This is a family newspaper.

Julie Hoskeer wins the contest though. She didn’t mention her favorite breakfast food, but posted this: “Just wanted to let you know my Dad LOVES your column!!”

Please feel free to email at any time with compliments like that!

    See ya next week!
