First day of school

Wiscasset’s first day of the new school year Tuesday, Sept. 5, was Wiscasset Elementary School Principal Stacy White’s first day with students. “This is what it’s all about,” she said, taking questions outside the school where she and other staff greeted students getting off the buses or arriving with their families.

The School Committee hired White after Mona Schlein announced her retirement. White started work over the summer. Seeing the students and families, she said she was very excited for the first day of school.

Students asked had mixed views on the return to school. Incoming third grader Eva Whitmore, 8, arriving with mother Kristen Whitmore, thought, then, still smiling, raised her left hand and made the so-so gesture. Her mother was carrying muffins the two made on behalf of Partners in Education (PIE) to give to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students coming in for their screening appointments.

Eva’s brother Tate was already at the school. He got himself there for the first day of sixth grade, their mother said.
