A red Ford Taurus careened into the Rite Aid on Main Street in Damariscotta at approximately 10:30 a.m. April 21.

Damariscotta Police Officer Devin Polizzotti reported that Janet Wynne, 77, of Damariscotta was driving her car from the Coastal Car Wash, which is located near the Rite Aid, after she had a car wash.

“She said her brakes felt a little loose after getting her car washed,” Polizzotti said. “When she tried to park her car the brakes didn't work at all and she went into the building.”

The car, which came to a stop atop a cement barrier with its nose suspended several feet in the air and against the building, narrowly missed a rack of propane canisters.

“Very lucky,” Polizzotti said. “No one was injured and she just coasted into the building; she missed the tanks.”

In addition to the Damariscotta Police Department, the Newcastle Fire Department and Damariscotta Fire Department responded to the accident.
