It’s ‘Into the Woods’ with Heartwood

Tue, 07/04/2017 - 11:00am

Venture “Into the Woods” with Heartwood Theater on July 13-22 with the Tony Award winning book and score by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.  One of Sondheim’s most popular works, “Into the Woods” is a musically sophisticated epic fairy tale about wishes, family and the choices we make – suitable for all ages.

Great storytelling requires the tellers to be as important as the tales.  To truly bring magic to the stage, the tellers, themselves, must first believe - and trust – the words and one another.  This purposefully spare version of “Into the Woods” invites actors to devise, collaborate, explore and yes – play - with wonderful bits of stage business from which our belief sprouts as easily as Jack’s magic beans.

The characters heading into these woods are at cross purposes, their goals and objectives clearly do not mesh.  Yet, they are drawn one to another.  With humor, warmth and wit, they discover the necessity and joy of coming together in the face of darkness.  Nothing could be more relevant.

This real-life cast is forging strong bonds, too, as 10 visiting professional actors join with 2 Midcoast professional actors and 3 musical theater students. The heart beneath this story beats steadily, under the deft direction of Director Griff Braley, Vocal Director & Coach Beth Preston and NY Choreographer, Michelle Bruckner.  The results leave no doubt - this is definitely an adventure worth taking.

Tickets are selling quickly, and shows often sell out – reservations strongly recommended.

Eight performances (including one matinee) will be staged at the Parker Poe Theater at Lincoln Academy.  Student tickets are $5, adults $30 (except Wednesday, July 19, which is the $20 night).  Full details at www.heartwoodtheater.org, emailinfo@heartwoodtheater.org or phone 207-563-1373.
