Midcoast Senior College offers lectures, workshops and discussions

Midcoast Senior College, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing educational opportunities to lifelong senior learners in Midcoast Maine, has announced a January and February line-up of events that include workshops, tours, and lectures.   

Fundamentals of Artisan Bread Baking:  From the Boule to Baguette with Norm Schroeder. Learn about the “Four T’s” of artisan bread baking:  tools, temperature, time, and technique. The workshop dates are Jan. 8, 22 and 29 at Topsham Public Library from 1 to 2:30 p.m. ($45 per person) 

French Conversation with Bill VanderWolk. Has your French become a bit rusty? Do you want to add to your vocabulary and make your speech more French?  This four-week workshop will give students a chance to practice speaking French.  Workshop dates are Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30 at UMA Brunswick, Room 119 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.  ($45 per person)

Book Talk with Leona Dufour. Join us for lively conversation about books. Books you've read or are reading . . . history, biography, fiction, mystery, best sellers, poetry, classics, self-help, you name it. Optional prompts to help guide our discussion will be emailed before the meeting.  This workshop is on Zoom Jan. 9 or 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (Select the date you wish to attend when you register.) Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College Tour. Take a guided tour of the new Arctic Museum galleries in the John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies. The following exhibits are currently featured: Iñuit Qiñiġaaŋi: Contemporary Inuit Photography; Collections and Recollections: Objects and the Stories They Tell; and At Home in the North. Jan. 23 from 10 to 11 a.m. (Free) 

Bowdoin College Museum of Art Tour. Four exhibits will be featured in this guided tour:  Jim Dine:  Last Year’s Forgotten Harvest; Without Apology: Asian American Selves, Memories, Futures; Threads: Artists Weave their Worlds; and Currents: Art Since 1875. Jan. 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. (Free)  

Building a Mind/Body Connection with Ann Kimmage. This experiential workshop will introduce you to basic skills that strengthen the connection between your mind and body. Learn how meditation, simple body movements that anybody can do, and prompt-generated journal writing can help reduce your stress level. Workshop dates are Jan. 11, 18 and 25 at Curtis Memorial Library Room 205 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. ($45) 

The Art of Storytelling with Dr. Phyllis Blackstone. This workshop will examine the construct of storytelling; procedures for choosing, preparing, and telling a story; examining one’s unique storytelling voice; and discovering resources, games, and variations of storytelling. Workshop dates are Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Feb. 1 at The Highlands Merrymeeting Bay Room in Topsham from 1 to 3 p.m. ($45)
