A wood-fueled heating unit in a large kiln at Blackfly Firewood in Alna malfunctioned, causing a fire that destroyed the kiln Friday morning, Assistant Alna Fire Chief Roger Whitney said. Firefighters from Wiscasset and Newcastle worked with Alna firefighters for about an hour to put out the fire at the business on Alna Road, near the Wiscasset line.  The fire was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Friday morning’s below-freezing temperatures caused no problems for firefighters or the hoses used on the fire, Whitney said.

No one was injured. Former Alna Selectman Butch Brown owns the property, Whitney said.
