One person was hurt and several agencies responded Sept. 14 when two vehicles crashed on Westport Island’s Route 144, near Ridge Road. The driver of a southbound, 2002 Mercury Villager van allegedly lost control of the van, which then entered the northbound lane and collided with a northbound, 2002 Hyundai, Lincoln County sheriff’s officials said.

The accident happened shortly before 5 p.m., briefly slowing traffic in both directions.

The woman driving the northbound car was taken to an area hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Dennison said at the scene. Sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Shea later identified her as Heather Willebeek-LeMair, 36, of Westport Island. The other driver, later identified as Gage Wahlstrom, 21, also of Westport Island, received a summons for failure to maintain control of a vehicle, Dennison said.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, Wiscasset police came to the scene, as well as the Westport Island Fire Department and Wiscasset Ambulance Service.
