Possible school closure vote on Monday night

Wiscasset residents could learn Monday night which school is targeted for closure. The school committee’s special meeting to further discuss consolidation, and possibly take a vote to close a school, is set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15, in the Wiscasset High School library.

Recent talks have centered on either closing Wiscasset Middle School and sending its younger students to Wiscasset Primary School and  grades seven and eight to Wiscasset High School; or closing Wiscasset Primary and moving all its students to the middle school.

Plans called for Interim Superintendent of Schools Lyford Beverage to gather more information for the committee ahead of Monday’s meeting.

Committee Chairman Steve Smith has said that taking a closure vote Sept. 15 would get the decision to the town in time for a referendum to get on the November ballot.
