Alfred “Willy” Simmons submitted his packet to retire on Aug. 29 after 34 years of service to the Wiscasset Police Department, Chief Jeff Lange announced in an email Aug. 31.

Simmons became a sergeant in February 2016, when then-Chief Troy Cline promoted him.

“The Town of Wiscasset and the Police Department would like to thank Willy for all the dedicated years of community service and devotion,” Lange wrote.

With Simmons’ retirement, School Resource Officer Craig Worster will be promoted to sergeant, but will remain the SRO indefinitely, until a suitable and qualified candidate for the job is found, Lange wrote.

According to Wiscasset Newspaper files, Simmons grew up in Wiscasset, graduating from Wiscasset High School. During his career, he worked for the Wiscasset Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office doing court security part time. He also worked for Maine Yankee for many years. During those years, he worked for the police department part time. When the power plant closed, he became a full-time officer, a position he’s kept ever since.

“We wish Willy well in his future endeavors,” Lange wrote.
