Tapestry Singers welcome new members

Tue, 01/02/2024 - 5:00pm

After wonderfully received December concerts, Tapestry Singers is gearing up to begin a new semester. Tapestry performs a variety of classical choral music. Some of the repertoire is very mainstream and some out of the ordinary.

“There is an informal audition process to check voice range and music reading skills, " says director, Beth Preston. “Some of the music is more advanced, so we want to make sure that all our singers commit to learning their part on their own using the practice tracks provided. We have a couple of spaces for women and need a few more basses and tenors. We also invite former members to re-join the choir.”

The group will hold rehearsals on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 at the Damariscotta Baptist Church to begin preparation for concerts in June.

In 2020, Tapestry Singers had planned a musical tribute to the Maine Bicentennial. Rehearsals began in January and then the pandemic shut everything down. The June program is a belated bicentennial celebration with nods to Maine’s cultural roots. The concert includes folk songs of the woods and the waterfront, Algonquin and Penobscot water songs, arrangements of Shaker and French Canadian tunes, and pieces that are based on the texts of some of Maine’s most prolific poets. Also featured will be guest Maine composers and Maine song collectors, Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee. As usual, there will be a mix of fun and challenge.

Tapestry Singers continues its commitment to featuring the music of living composers. To request an audition go to tapestrysingersmaine.org/join-us.
