Third annual Mutt Scrub is a success

Dog owners migrated to Boothbay Harbor on Saturday to take part in the third annual Mutt Scrub held by Two Salty Dogs Pet Outfitters located at 22 McKown Street. All proceeds were to be donated to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb.

Pet store owners Liana and Don Kingsbury, now in business for their fourth year, said that the event had grown steadily since the first year in 2013.

"We started with 20 dogs, last year we had 45 and we hope to have 60 today," said Don Kingsbury.

Kingsbury said that people should set their calendar for the last Saturday of July in future years.

He was encouraged by the number of sponsors, gifts, and volunteers that donated in support of the event.

"They have been very generous,” he said.

Contributions of 20 gift certificates and $1,800 in raffle prizes were given out on Saturday.

In addition to the dog baths and nail clippings, the event featured a doggy talent show and doggy musical chairs.

Summer resident Linda King was hoping for her third consecutive win in the doggy musical chairs competition with her rescue dog, Becky.

King said Becky had learned quickly to sit on command. Becky had not been readily selected for rescue because of a rare black tongue genetic abnormality.

"She was just so happy to be rescued she would do anything," said King. Becky was joined this year by King’s second rescue dog, Enzo, who she considered entering into the second of two musical chair events.

However, Becky was not destined to win her third title having been edged out by Buddy who was led through the course by Alexis Graham.
