Wiscasset SunCATs, town, nonprofit team up on storm window project

How can you save money this winter? You can obtain low-cost interior storm window inserts and save on your energy bill. The Wiscasset Conservation Commission and the Wiscasset SunCATs Climate Action Team are partnering with the nonprofit WindowDressers to sponsor a community effort to build energy-saving inserts. The work will take place at First Congregational Church in Wiscasset in December.

Interested people sign up for inserts either by going to www.windowdressers.org or by calling the local coordinator Marty Fox at 882-8430.  You will then get a call from Measuring Volunteers who will arrange a convenient time to measure your windows.  The measurements are sent via computer and WindowDressers builds the frames.  When all of the frames from the group are built, the frames are taken to the "Community Build" at the church, from Dec. 4 to Dec. 8. Here, volunteers complete the inserts by applying shrinkable film on both sides of the frame – creating an insulating air space – and a foam gasket around the edges.  Customers are strongly encouraged to volunteer a few hours at the Community Build and may bring their frames home as soon as they are completed.

The inserts are reusable year after year. An average size window (30” W by 52” H) in a natural pine finish costs about $25. WindowDressers is a volunteer-run nonprofit and also offers special pricing for low-income residents.
Customers and volunteers are needed for a successful build.  Please contact Fox at 882-8430 with questions, to sign up for window inserts, or to volunteer. Time and space are limited.
