WMHS ‘Points of Light’ helps peers

It's that time of year again. A time to look around and help others during the holiday season. Wiscasset Middle High School students and staff are doing just that. Each year the Student Council puts up a “tree of lights” in the front office and each light has a tag attached. Each tag has a needed gift for someone who is struggling through the holidays.

This year, the kids decided that instead of adopting a family in the community, they would focus on helping their peers in the school who needed something to make their holiday brighter. Once the staff and students found out that the tags were ready, they hurried to get a tag to help. Almost all the tags were gone in just a couple of days!

According to Deb Pooler, advisor to the Student Council and an ed tech in technology, “The people in this school are so giving and kind to those in need. We have been doing this project for about 17 years now and every year the staff and students give so much. I am truly proud to be a part of such a caring school!”

Student Council worked closely with Carin Stromgren, who is a social worker at the school. Stromgren ensured that student confidentiality was guarded throughout the event. The “Points of Light” comes to a close with a school-wide assembly which celebrates the unity of the school in helping to give others who are less fortunate a joyful holiday season.
