Story Location:
U.S. Route 1 # 313
Wiscasset, ME 04578

There’s a new automotive repair shop in Wiscasset, but the owner is anything but new to engines – of all kinds.

Larry Eckert opened his business, FIX Marine, Truck and Automotive, or FIX for short, at the beginning of November. He has been working on engines – both automobile and boat – for as long as he can remember.

“I grew up around trucks and boats, in Huntington, Long Island,” he said. “And I’ve been working on them forever.”

Eckert moved to Maine 25 years ago and worked around the Wiscasset-Boothbay area extensively, mainly on trucks and boats, for other companies, including Gillespie Marine, an automotive repair shop in Wiscasset, and New England Detroit Diesel in Portland, then went into business for himself.

“I’ve done a lot of work on diesel engines, working out of my truck, going from job to job, mainly working on big diesel lobster boats,” he said.

Besides all aspects of automotive and boat motor and gear repair, Eckert will also repair and weld plows, a service he said is needed in the area. “There’s really nobody around here, or anyone who has the time, to fix plows. We’ll do pretty much anything related to cars, trucks and boats.”

Eckert said once his business takes off he’ll hire a mechanic to help with the automotive side of the business, so he can focus on his real specialty: Diesels. “I want to work on all aspects of repair, but my preference is really diesels.”

Eckert is in the process of obtaining inspection licenses, one for him and one for the shop, to add to his list of services.

The building his shop is in housed another repair shop that had been closed for around a year before the property was purchased by Pro Body Works owner Bruce Benner. Benner rents the space to Eckert, who said he’d been wanting to have his own shop for a few years.

Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, FIX is located at U.S. Route 1 #313, beside Pro Body Works. Saturdays are normally 8 a.m. to noon, but Eckert said he’ll stay longer if required. Weekends are by appointment. Call 207-350-0979.
