Bruce Burnham’s photography exhibit will be on display in the lobby throughout August and September and can be viewed during normal banking hours. The show, at 77 Oak Street in Boothbay Harbor, is sponsored by the Boothbay Region Art Foundation.

Burnham is a native of Boothbay with roots back to the 1700s. He has been looking through the viewfinders of cameras since seventh grade. When asked about his favorite subject he would tell you that photography is all about the light more than the subject. Nature is what motivates him the most, from birds and landscapes to crashing waves and patterns in nature that most people walk by and never see. He has no formal education in photography, but learned a lot from attending workshops with Freeman Patterson and André Gallant. They were inspirational in his finding a different way to see.

He helped the late Jim Taliana create and grow the Maine Photography Show 14 years ago and Bruce has been chairman for the last 10. From a humble beginning of 300 entries it has grown into one of Maine’s premier photography exhibits, with over 1,000 entries in 2017. The show is hosted by Boothbay Region Art Foundation each April.

Bruce has won many awards with his images and has hung work at many galleries and venues: Portland Public Library, Bass Park, Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and the First National Bank.

Digital photography has become a wonderful medium as the control over varied light situations is much easier. When asked about Photoshop Bruce says, “ …  it is a crutch for those who don’t want to learn how to control their images with the camera.” The most he does with it is to remove an errant highlight or a bothersome stick of wood in the image.”

Bruce shoots with his friends around the state and Acadia National Park is one of his favorite destinations. He hopes you will enjoy this show.
