Charmion Brothers of Dresden died at her home on Nov. 19, 2017.

She was born on Feb. 26, 1935 in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third child of Lawrence K. Hussey and his wife, Edna Mae. Charmion was a sunny little girl with red-gold hair, which her mother, who read books about artists, said was called Titian, because it was a hair color featured in his paintings.

Charmion enjoyed her status as the youngest of the siblings, but after high school she began her long and productive career at “Ma Bell,” later known as AT&T. She started as an operator, and rose steadily to the level of middle management. A brief marriage gave her the name Brothers, which she retained for the convenience of the workplace.

Upon retirement, she followed friends to Maine, where she settled down in a mid-1800s house in Dresden. She liked the leisurely pace of village life, and gave willingly of her time wherever she saw the need. She was particularly drawn to children’s causes and veterans support.

She was a great fan of crossword puzzles and sped through two or three a week. Another passion was the challenge of a really good mystery novel; her favorite authors included Robert Parker, James Patterson, and the ever elegant P.D. James.

Unhappily, ill health began to contract her world, but she was always ready to join the ladies of the United Methodist Church in Southport to help preside over the jewelry table at the popular summer fair, as recently as this past July.

She was a true and loyal friend. She had been looking forward to the “Lady Lunch,” which was coming up on the 27th… she would have loved that little party with old companions, alas.

Charmion was known for her kindness and generosity; her loss is felt most keenly by the close family who knew her best: her sister, Dulcianne, and brother-in-law, Whit Vye, of Wiscasset; her nephew, Christian Vye and his wife, Colleen; and their two beautiful daughters, Lena and Stephanie, of Rhode Island. We cling together in our loss, and pray that her dear spirit may rest in peace.
