Contests shape up for Wiscasset school committee, selectboard

Wiscasset voters will have choices on the June 11 ballot for selectboard and school committee seats. Nominations closed Thursday, April 11 with more people filing papers for both panels than there are seats up for election, according to information Town Clerk Linda Perry provided. 

Three two-year terms for selectboard seats are up for election. The incumbents, James Andretta, William “Bill” Maloney and Sarah Whitfield all filed papers, as did Richard Lutes, Perry said. And filing for school committee were incumbent Indriani Demers along with Jonathan Barnes, Elizabeth Kyle, Gardner Leighton, Douglas Merrill and Tracey Whitney. Two three-year terms are up for election to that committee.

The other school committee member with a seat up for election, Desiree Bailey, is not seeking another term. Bailey explained in a Facebook post, she “had a wonderful six years” and will keep volunteering on committees, “helping where I can” and getting information she needs, “as can anybody else. 

“Thank you for all the amazing support I have had from so many people that have reached out to me or stopped me in town to thank me for my time. I am excited to see the school continue to go in the right direction. I know whoever replaces me will do great and I just hope and pray they do it for all the right reasons (for the students for they are our future) and I hope they bring positivity and a productive morale with them ...,” Bailey wrote.
 

Perry said no one took out papers for the six budget committee seats up for election. Daniel Averill filed papers for water district trustee. The district has two seats up for election.
