Dear Editor:

Voters of Wiscasset, you are invited to participate in what is recognized in our country as the purest form of democracy. This democratic event takes place at the Wiscasset Elementary School on Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. This town meeting was called by the Wiscasset Select Board in response to a petition signed by 222 registered voters.

This will be an opportunity for a civil discussion and debate as to the need to fund the planning office. This funding will restore the position of a town planner, whose position description includes "responsibility for coordinating the growth and development in the town through the application of local, state, and federal laws, regulations and ordinances." Does this town need such a position? Can this town afford the position? After the open debate and sharing of opinions, a vote will be taken. Aren't we fortunate to have this democratic opportunity!
