On Thursday, Feb. 8 at 6:57 a.m., Lincoln County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle crash on Route 27 “Boothbay Road” in Edgecomb just north of the Boothbay line.

Deputies responded and found two vehicles had collided in the roadway. A black 1996 Ford F150 had been southbound on Route 27. This vehicle was operated by Christopher George, 30, of Pittston. The second vehicle, operated by Alexander Nielsen, 33, of Boothbay was a tan 2014 Toyota Tundra. The Nielsen Toyota was traveling northbound on Route 27.

The preliminary investigation showed that the Nielsen vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and into the path of the George vehicle. George attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to. The two vehicles collided head on, in the southbound lane. 

The collision resulted in catastrophic damage to the George vehicle. George was entrapped in the wreckage and required the fire departments’ extrication efforts to be freed from the wreckage.

George received EMS treatment during the extraction. Due to the nature of George’s injuries, it was determined by EMS that more advanced care was required. Life Flight of Maine transported him to Maine Medical Center in Portland. George had multiple broken bones and required several surgeries.

Nielsen was transported to Miles Hospital and received treatment for his injuries – facial lacerations and a broken hand.   

Both parties were seat belted and airbags deployed in both vehicles.

The preliminary investigation indicates speed and impairment were factors in this crash.   

Sergeant Kevin Dennison is the primary investigator. He was assisted by Edgecomb Fire Department, Boothbay Fire Department, CLC Ambulance and Wiscasset Ambulance. Sagadahoc County and Brunswick Police, Accident Reconstruction Investigators assisted in the investigation. Maine Department of Transportation helped detour traffic during the investigation.

Route 27 was closed to traffic for 3 ½ hours during the event. Traffic was detoured until 10:30 a.m. when the road was reopened.   

As a result of the preliminary investigation, Sgt. Dennison sought warrants for Nielsen. Warrants charging Aggravated Assault—Class B, Aggravated OUI–Class C, Reckless Conduct with Dangerous Weapon–Class C and Driving to Endanger–Class C were approved by the courts.   

Nielsen was located and taken into custody on Feb. 9 by Deputy Jerold Winslow. Nielsen was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail. Nielsen was released on $ 2,500 cash bail. Nielsen’s initial court appearance is set for March 28 at 8:30 a.m.
