Brunswick-based artist Ed McCartan’s acrylic paintings of botanical/spiritual themes will be on exhibit at the Miles Memorial Hall Gallery Feb. 9-March 15.

“These works represent my exploration of botanical and gestural imagery,” said McCartan. “ I work in many different styles, and I often use double images because I am interested in the "dialogue" this creates between the different areas of the work. Small natural forms, twigs, ferns, flowers, etc. leave room for experimentation with sumi-like strokes and lines and the layering of glazes throughout the composition. I go to nature and the possibilities inherent in the materials for inspiration. It is an ongoing endeavor.”

McCartan is a retired art teacher, most recently at the Emma Willard School and Russell Sage College in Troy, New York.

McCartan currently teaches at the Midcoast Senior College in Brunswick and paints in his studio at the old Bath Memorial Hospital with the help of his dog Mickey.

His work has been exhibited in Maine galleries from York to Portland to Brunswick to Richmond to Wiscasset and Damariscotta. McCartan has works in the permanent collections at these New York galleries: Albany Institute of History & Art, Quick Museum and the Schenectady Museum of Art.
