Harbor Theater will have a special showing of “Final Portrait” on Thursday, May 3, 7 p.m. and Friday, May 4, 2 p.m. The film depicts one of the last portraits done by famed Swiss artist and sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966).

Giacometti ‘s early works included influences of cubism, surrealism and expressionism, but he was best known for his later tall, skinny, emaciated men, including “Three Men Walking “ and “Walking Man I,” which broke the record for a work of art at auction in 1960, selling at $104.3 million. He was one of the giants of 20th century art, with a reputation as a perfectionist, making his portrait subjects sit absolutely still for hours on end, as we see in the film, “Final Portrait.”

Director Stanley Tucci not only captures the great artist at work, but immerses him in the daily grind of the creative process…the starts and stops, the self-doubt, and sometimes even the anger at “not getting it right.”

Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush portrays Giacometti struggling to create his last great work of art, a portrait of author James Lord (Armie Hammer). Rush, as the crusty old genius, rants and raves amongst his canvases and paint rags, first mad at his sitter, and then at himself, in what Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post describes as a role full of “charisma … ferocious and unabashed.”

Tickets for the Thursday, May 2 screening are $10 for adults, $8 for members and children under 18. All Friday matinee tickets are $6 (no member discounts). The Harbor Theater is located at 2 Theater St., Boothbay Harbor.
