Lenten services begin with First Congo

Sun, 02/04/2018 - 7:00am

Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, begins the Season of Lent for 2018. First Congregational Church UCC of Wiscasset will join St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in the St. Philip’s Parish Hall at 6 p.m., for a service of prayer and penitence, as we participate in the moving and ancient ceremony of the Imposition of Ashes.

On Sunday, Feb. 18, Rev. Josh Fitterling will begin a Lenten preaching series entitled “Love Never Ends” at the First Congregational Church. Inspired by the well-known passage 1 Corinthians 13 and nurtured by the teaching of Jesus, we will explore aspects of true love and God’s love as we look toward Easter, where we discover that love never ends.

Holy week services will include a 10 a.m. service on Palm Sunday, 7 p.m. candlelight Tenebrae service on Maundy Thursday, a shared Good Friday service at 6 p.m. in the St. Philip’s Parish Hall, and two services on Easter, a shared 6 a.m. sunrise service with St. Philip’s Episcopal Church on the town dock, and a 10 a.m. Easter Celebration service in the First Congregational Church.

Throughout Lent, Reverend Fitterling will lead two bible study groups: one on select Sunday evenings from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and one on select Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This study will explore the work of “taking up our cross” as we consider the Apostle Paul’s journey to Jerusalem in the book of Acts and the ways in which it mirrors the journey of Jesus to the cross. See the church website, www.uccwiscaset.org, for a full schedule.

All services and events are open to the public and everyone is welcome. For more information, contact the church office at 882-7544 or at fccw@myfairpoint.net.
