The Maine Department of Transportation announced the following work for the weeks of Sept. 17 and 24:

Construction and backfill of the wet-cast wall; placing gravel and fine grading of the sidewalks; paving the sidewalks; fine grading and paving the end of Water Street and the final strip in the parking area next to the wet-cast wall; placing the remainder of the curb in the parking lot area. This work will be done during the day between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

On Monday, Sept. 24, the contractor will close Route 1 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the Wiscasset end of the Donald Davies Bridge for upgrades to the railroad crossing. There will be signed detours for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Southbound traffic will be directed to turn right onto Sheepscot Road to Route 218. Traffic will then turn left onto Route 218 and follow it to Route 1 in Wiscasset.

Northbound traffic will be directed to turn left onto Route 218 and follow it to Sheepscot Road. Traffic will turn right onto Sheepscot Road and follow it to Route 1.

Another announcement adds: "This closure will allow time for work crews to upgrade the railroad crossing on the Wiscasset end of the Donald E. Davey Bridge. This work is part of a set of comprehensive improvements to downtown Wiscasset along US Route 1 from the Fort Hill Street/Federal Street intersection to the Donald E. Davey bridge. There are also several improvements along Railroad Avenue including the construction of a new parking lot. Because the work takes place during overnight hours, there are minimal impacts for the traveling public. Route 218 (Federal Street) has a weight restriction of 6,000 pounds for thru vehicles. This will be waived for the duration of the Route 1 closure."

All scheduling is weather-dependent and subject to change. If this happens, MDOT will release updates as soon as possible.
