New England, Mid-Atlantic states lead nation in volume and value of several fisheries

NOAA Fisheries has released the “Fisheries of the U.S. 2016 report, and once again New Bedford, Mass. was the leading U.S. port by value for the 17th consecutive year and American lobsters were the nation’s most valuable landed species. Maine led the nation in American lobster landings for the 35th consecutive year, with 132 million pounds valued at nearly $537.9 million. Massachusetts ranked second with 17.7 million pounds valued at $82 million.

Alaska led all states in the value and volume of commercial landings, with 5.6 billion pounds valued at $1.6 billion. Maine and Massachusetts ranked second and third in the value of landings at $633.6 million and $552.1 million, respectively. Maine and Massachusetts produced more than 94 percent of the total national landings for American lobster in 2016, each showing an increase of 8 percent by volume over 2015.
