​The Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum is celebrating both the past and future during its Annual Picnic this weekend. Activities will be happening all weekend long up, down, and on the railway, guaranteeing a unique experience for all visitors beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
 
At Sheepscot Station, one can board a train pulled by the 1891 Portland-built steam locomotive or a Model T railcar northward to Alna Center and Top of Mountain stations. And visitors can examine progress on a number of projects including machine shop upgrades and the restoration of a 1918 Howe Truss Bridge which will be installed over Trout Brook later this summer.

Handcar rides and turntable demonstrations will also be offered. Picnic foods will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Adjacent to the station, an exhibit documenting the history of the effort to rebuild the narrow gauge railway in the Sheepscot Valley is on display. There will be a huge yard sale benefiting the Museum’s archive at Sheepscot both days. The archive collects and preserves photographs and documents on Maine’s narrow gauge railways and the Sheepscot Valley.
 
At Alna Center Station, the Museum will host a World War I encampment in partnership with 103rd Regiment Living History, a World War I historical reenactment group based in Maine. Visitors will experience World War I historians practicing maneuvers and drills. Artifacts from Europe and the homefront will also be on display.
 
For those looking to explore a bit of Maine’s woods, hiking trails will be open for passengers detraining at Top of Mountain station. From Top of Mountain visitors can also walk northward along the railway to explore the recently restored right-of-way on the Mountain Extension, a nearly one-mile restoration of the Railway now underway between Top of Mountain and Trout Brook.
 
The Railway will offer frequent train service leaving Sheepscot for Alna Center and Top of Mountain from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days. A special train will run in the late afternoon on Saturday for those interested in capturing unique images of the World War 1 reenactors.
 
Admission is, as always, free. Round trip train tickets are $8/adults, $5/children 4-12,  and free for children 3 and under. Also, multiple-ride and all-day passes are available. Train tickets will be sold during the event at Sheepscot station.
