The Waldo Theatre today announced audition dates for “Tanglin’ Hearts,” an original comedy with country songs which will be staged at The Waldo early this fall. Book and lyrics are by actress, playwright, and Edgecomb resident Zora Margolis with music by Peter Spelman. An open casting call for this community theatre musical production will be held at The Waldo on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 1 p.m. and Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m.

Members of the local community are invited to audition for the four female and six male roles, with characters ranging in age from 20s to 60s. All roles require singing ability and the ability to learn simple choreography. The performances are currently scheduled for Sept. 28 and 29 and October 4-6. Rehearsals will begin in mid-July.

Inspired by Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” “Tanglin’ Hearts” promises to be a fun and funny, toe tappin’ good time for audiences of all ages. The play will be directed by Tenant Harbor resident Lynna Henderson, with musical direction by Boothbay’s Guy Scott, and choreography by Damariscotta’s Niall Lessard. “Tanglin’ Hearts” is being co-produced at The Waldo by George Bates and Zora Margolis

“Tanglin’ Hearts has plenty of social and political satire, and slapstick comedy, but at its core it’s about caring for the environment, and the complexities of imperfect people and the challenges they can face when they fall in love,” said Margolis. “The songs are melodic and memorable and are inspired by a deep love and respect for traditional American roots music.”

“We are not only proud to be producing our first full-scale musical since The Waldo’s re-opening, but we’re also proud to be able to give another local playwright an opportunity to showcase their work,” said Susan Hodder, The Waldo’s executive director. “Audiences who saw our 2023 production of Karmo Sanders’ ‘Homer Bound’ saw ‘Tanglin’ Hearts’ author Zora Margolis as the unabashedly funny Aunt Lena. Clearly, she has a real gift for comedy.”
