The 131st Maine House of Representatives recognized Wiscasset students with a standing ovation at the State House Chamber.

Linnea Andersson, a Wiscasset student said, “The March 15th visit to the Maine State Legislature was an eye-opening experience and getting a personal tour of the State House from State Rep. Ed Polewarczykwas special.”

Rep. Polewarczyk of Wiscasset and Anne Fuhrer gave an informative guided tour. Earlier in the academic year, Polewarczyk visited the Wiscasset Middle High School Principles of Democracy class discussing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs procedural issues and policy initiatives.  

Ben Roach said of the March 15 visit, “I really enjoyed the grand and intricate architecture. It was really nice to be shown around the entirety of the Capitol Building. Also, the officials were very friendly and welcoming.”

The building was designed by renowned architect Charles Bulfinch using Greek Revival elegance in 1828. Bulfinch’s cultural impact can be seen by his designs with the Massachusetts State House (1788), Connecticut State House (1796), and the U.S. Capitol rotunda (1817).

The Greek Revival is a style of architecture inspired by the symmetry, simplicity and elegance of the ancient Greek buildings of 5th century B.C. Grace Greene said, “The history and architecture of the capital building is fascinating, and I am glad to learn about the political process.”

Emily Gilliam said, “Going to the state legislature was a wonderful and informative field trip for our class. Even though we did not get to sit through the entire House session, it was still cool to see parliamentary procedure in action. It was also very nice to be recognized by the entire house for being there!”
